内容简介：
故事发生在第一次世界大战前夕，主人公哈内偶然结识了一个叫斯卡德尔的美国人，从而得知了德国间谍暗杀访英的希腊首相卡罗里德斯的阴谋。斯卡德尔深知自身难保，准备将破坏间谍阴谋的使命托付给哈内。几天后斯卡德尔被杀身亡。哈内化妆成送奶员开始了他几天的逃亡生活，由于他还涉嫌谋杀斯卡德尔（他死在哈内房间里），哈内面临着双重追捕，他疲于奔命，逃躲于苏格兰荒原。他多次九死一生，常常险象环生，最后获得了一位好心政治候选人的帮助，找到外交部官员瓦尔特爵士，虽然他们未能制止德国间谍暗杀希腊首相，但最后却成功地破译三十九级台阶的暗码，并找到间谍逃亡港口，将化装成海军大臣窃取英法作战计划的间谍抓获归案。

作者介绍：
约翰·巴肯（1875年8月26日—1940年2月11日），苏格兰小说家及政治家，曾任加拿大总督，代表作《三十九级台阶》。1927年代表苏格兰高等教育界当选英国下院议员，被任命为加拿大总督。公务之余他仍坚持写作。那一时期的作品有《尤利乌斯·凯撒》，《沃尔特·司各特爵士》，《奥利弗·克伦威尔》和《奥古斯都》。还有一些优秀的惊险小说。他深入加拿大各地体察民情，深的英国人、法国人和印第安人的爱戴，这种频繁的出访，特别是1939年加拿大皇室巡查，加重了他的病情，在蒙特利尔去世，1940年出版《临终回忆录》。

The little man had told me a pack of lies. All his yarns about the Balkans and the Jew-Anarchists and the Foreign Office Conference were eyewash, and so was Karolides. And yet not quite, as you shall hear.
