角色最好使用演出而非解释的方式来呈现。利用精心设计的视觉线索，把看不见的内心转折、隐秘往事和情绪冲突展现出来，效果会比直接说明好很多。
背景故事指的是影片开始之前发生的事情：童年的创伤，新近的危机，长久的积怨，实际场景的历史，等等。最好是借由随意偶然但效果十足的线索，以拐弯抹角的方式把背景故事透露出来。
